Materials- Steatite & Cerasil™

For low-cost ceramic insulators, GBC offers two basic materials:

  • L3 Steatite Ceramic
  • CerasilTM 223U Ceramic

Steatite, Cerasil, and Alumino Silicate Ceramics L3 Steatite - GBC's Steatite (Proto-Enstatite, MgO Si02) Ceramic is ideal for high frequency, low loss, high voltage insulation. Our L-3 Steatite composition is multi-component crystalline phases of the magnesium-aluminum-silicate system group. With good mechanical properties, low loss electrical qualities, it is ideal for resistor forms, surge arrestors, standoffs, spacers, and coil forms. Steatite is easily fabricated to close tolerances and is much less expensive than alumina ceramic insulators.

CerasilTM 223U Ceramic is an alumino silicate ceramic with properties similar to steatite, but with some distinct advantages. 223U has a lower thermal coefficient of expansion than steatite or high alumina ceramics which results in excellent thermal shock resistance. 223U also features lower firing temperature, consistent lower shrinkage and less tool wear resulting in lower cost and faster delivery. Cerasil 223U is ideal for volume production of small pressed insulators often replacing steatite or alumina parts.
